Loneliness
I sit alone and watch time
As it sails from in front of me,
Like a beam of light defined
As the fastest thing one can see.
I smell the loveliest flowers,
I taste the sweetest fruit,
I own the wealthiest power
I play the pipe organ’s flute.
Yet I am not satisfied
With all that I can do
Although it boosts my pride,
There isn’t one to say it to.
In the morning I get up at three-
I haven’t had much rest-
I wander about endlessly,
In a house as big as Everest.
There is not anyone here
To tell me “Go back to bed,”
Or to look over me when I fear
There is a fever in my head.
I scorn at those who look at me
And insolently say
That I am very lucky to be
What I am today.
They are fools who overestimate,
The joy that money provides.
But truth alone decides all fate,
That money dwells in lies.
Better were the days of youth
When I was not yet aware
That a friend would support me in truth
But my cash would leave me in despair.
Alas now, it is all too late
When realization tears me apart,
That only a friend could open the gate
To my dark and lonely heart.
Thus with thoughts of guilt and repentance
Do my days move along.
I wonder what I did to deserve this vengeance-
Whatever did go wrong?
