Let's begin with the day before yesterday, that is the 19th. So this kid from my grade and I had to go to this other school for a math and science quiz, and these two other girls from the ninth grade had also to go to the same school for a debate regarding the latest topic of discussion: that unmanned satellite thingy that's supposed to have already dropped whatever it was supposed to drop on the moon on behalf of India. We were accompanied by our math teacher. The school sent a minivan to pick us up, and boy was the ride a hellishly long one. On the way we had to pick up the school's advisor, the chief guest and one of the judges, and the school's principal. Heck, the principal was a gay asshole, I swear. He had dark lips that were too thick to belong to men, long, ugly and greasy hair, and what was more, he wore a headband, for crying out loud, a headband! The drive was not exactly as monotonous as I had envisaged, but definitely a lot more boring than I should have liked. Nevertheless, we did forge a reasonably fun time for ourselves. My friend--my partner in the quiz--peaked over the chief guest's shoulder and saw her writing nonsense of some sort and tried to decipher the little she was able to write in a vehicle moving at 80 kmph on a national highway. Needless to say, he wasn't entirely successful. He caught a few words here and there, sporadically, but nothing that could define what she was writing. We gave up after a while. Anyway, we reached there some two hours later and when I got off the car, man, did my legs ache. It was a whole five minutes before I got accustomed to standing again, and even then walking seemed a difficult task. We were offered refreshments as soon as we got off, after which we went around, looking at the different exhibits set up. Yeah, it was also an exhibition. The math exhibits made me yawn, but I had to admit, they had some pretty impressive stuff in the science part. There was this electroplating thing where they actually electroplated a key with copper; a demonstration of a gun using a geometric compass, the tip of a pen and some random sulfur compound, which, on heating, caused the pen-tip to shoot off from that pointy part of a compass at an undiscernable speed and with a really loud noise; electric circuits combined in a series and parallel; a simple microscope made of a plastic pipe and a lens or something; this thing with which you can check out how much hand-eye coordination you have; this other thing with which you can check out how much power your lungs have; and basically such stuff. They were really interesting and enjoyable, and yeah, commendable. After that we went to the auditorium where the quiz was supposed to be; everything else, too, actually. And surprise, surprise, the quiz was first. Much to our surprise and immense joy, there were only three teams that were participating. It turned out that the other schools had their annual sports day on that day, and were unable to show up as a result. So among these three teams the host-school was one, my friend and I were the other, and there was another one school, which was known to have a really good standard of science. So the quiz commenced, and lasted a rahter long time, actually. There were four rather elaborate rounds that we had to go through, all the while praying that the opponents don't answer and that we get comparitively easier questions. My friend and I equally contributed to our score, and in the end, it turned out that we won. Then there was the debate where one of the girls was way too monotonous and the other overacted, so we totally lost that one. So my friend and I left the auditorium because it was time for lunch and my teacher and the two girls were talking to some people from the other schools, and this random guy passing by is like, "Where's your school?" And my friend tells him, and he nods like a retard and makes to walk away. And we make to walk away too, but my friend says to me (directing it to him): "Anyway, who are you?" You know--in that sardonic, supercilious manner. So that bimbo hears it and he turns around and goes: "Come here. I will tell you who am I." I haven't paraphrased it, if you've noticed. So my friend goes up to him apprehensively and the guy says proudly: "I am the teacher in this school."--as if he's the only one, and my friend keeps his cool and says: "And what do you teach?" and he answers: "I am a teacher of mathematics in this school." He says it really proudly as if expecting my friend to fall to the ground in shock and look at him with veneration. But my friend decides to use flattery and says: "I could see your school answered really well."--They didn't; they lost in the quiz, so in that case I suppose it sounded bitterly sarcastic. And then the man goes: "Okay, but next time, talk to me, not behind me." And he turns around and leaves, and my friend joins me and we walk toward the lunch hall. On the way he's like: "He has such long ears!" I don't know why, but I burst out laughing and didn't stop all the way to the lunch hall where I told our math teacher the whole story in bursts, because I couldn't control my laughter. Lunch was fine. Nothing worth mentioning, but nothing I wouldn't have eaten at the same time. Random stuff, the chief boob spoke. Oh, by the way, what she was writing in the car was actually her own introduction. Funnily enough, she used the word--"multi-talented"--to describe herself. Talk about self-importance! Then we left. We traveled back the same way, and this time, our topic of discussion was our chief guest, because she was practically the vainest woman I've ever seen, apart from the English teacher of the other section of the 10th grade. Heck, she wore her sunglasses even after sundown! I suppose she realized there was something suspicious about our constant laughter, and perhaps that it was mostly directed toward her, because she kept turning back and glancing at us periodically, wearing a strained smile. Finally she decided to take off her sunglasses, and then she fell asleep, and her mouth was open, and her head kept bobbing in accordance with the irregularity of the roads of the outskirts. It was a pitiable, yet hilarious site. And finally it was time for her to get off, and she did so with great alacrity, and as soon as she entered the gates of her house, she waved at someone. She mentioned her having kids to my math teacher, so I guessed it was them, but my friend said, "She's so happy to see the watchman!" Again, I burst out laughing uncontrollably. I was dropped off at school at 6:45pm, and I waited for 15 minutes for my parents to come and pick me up, and yeah, that was the day before yesterday.
Yesterday was dreary. Nothing worth mentioning. Today I was totally grilled by that monstrosity that is our physics teacher. He asked me a question, and I answered it, and he made a question from my answer, and this went on for quite some time until I found myself talking chemistry, with him asking me why hydrogen chloride is a polar compound, and stuff like that, and finally he asked me why carbon dioxide dissolves in water even though it isn't a polar compound, and I'd already been questioned for some twenty minutes. I vaguely knew the answer to that, but decided that I didn't want to play his little game anymore. Besides, I didn't want him to bombard me with another array of questions and make me look stupid in front of the whole class. So I said, "I don't know", and sat back down. I stood my ground in front of that demon for twenty whole minutes--something nobody else in the history of our school could have done. So he went on to explain that carbon dioxide forms a weak hydrogen bond with water, which forms an electrostatic force, which makes it act as an ionic compound, or something to that effect. I only knew the hydrogen bond part of it. By the time that was over, the period was already gone. Fuck it all. That pot-bellied killer blatantly picked on me! He claims to have a PhD in chemistry, but he mistook sigma bonds for pi bonds once when he went off on one of his tangents in the middle of class, thinking no one knew what they were. I did, though.
I have a lot of things to do in very little time, like finish my history, geography and environment projects, my computer records, study twenty topics in Hindi for a viva test and fifteen others for a written test some time in the first week of December, and study everything else, because my exams begin on the 10th. Man, oh, man, am I toast. I think I'm gonna have to resort to transferring the responsibility of my projects to my mom so I can at least be confident of lasting through the exams.
