smugness and dark humor

The guys at school seem to have a predilection for launching surprise attacks on the students. Today, for instance, we had an unscheduled "doubts" class from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., during which we explored the finer aspects of being bored to death. In the hope of making the classes look satisfactorily large, the school-folk contrived to hold joint classes (two batches per class). Much to their chagrin, I imagine, only a handful of people bothered to show up. The rest were doubtless happily tucked into their beds, as every sensible person should have been in the middle of what was supposed to have been summer vacation. But unfortunately I am not a sensible person (never was), and I decided against my better judgement to sacrifice my beautiful Saturday morning in favor of exploring the unknown. When I reached school, I again displayed a stunning lack of foresight by promptly sitting down in one of the frontmost seats. It was only when the physics teacher, who happened to teach the other batch, arrived that I realized my folly. I was expecting at any moment to be subjected to some sort of crazy, senile malevolence, for the guy had a haggard look about him that couldn't have promised anything good. Luckily it transpired that he was not a temperamental person, and he didn't ask anyone any questions. At the end of class I felt a whole lot smarter. The feeling lingered even when I found myself unable to comprehend practically anything in chemistry class. It was heightened in math class, in which, despite my state of severe drowsiness, I found myself soundly capable of ratiocination. That I was able to arrive at the right conclusions to most of the problems the math teacher scribbled on the board before many of the others (including the Geek Lords) did, and was sometimes able to arrive effortlessly at conclusions that somehow eluded them, gave me a feeling of supreme smugness that wouldn't leave -- one of the perks of being a lazy genius.

On a different note -- and this is the part where this entry, like most of the others on this blog, proves its loyalty to the undying art of diverging from the starting topic (it's one of the reasons, by the way, that I can never come up with a title that does justice to the things I write) -- I'm reading Evelyn Waugh's Decline and Fall because it's supposed to be darkly humorous. Even though I claim to be a fan of dark humor, this is actually the first book of the kind I've read. It's not funny per se. (I suppose that after reading Wodehouse, it's impossible to find anything else particularly funny.) But there were certain points at which I couldn't help but laugh. For the most part the humor borders on silliness (the fact that there are characters named Lord and Lady Circumference who have a son named Tangent should explain everything), but the dark humor is manifest, and is immensely enjoyable. For example, "'Hullo!' she [Lady Circumference] said in a deep bass voice, 'how are you? Circumference ran over a fool of a boy. I've just been chaffing your daughter here about her frock...'" Tangent is later shot in the foot by a Butler, who is really an imposter, when the latter fires a gun to indicate the start of a race, and has to get it amputated. It's funny, in a morbid, misanthropic sense. Yup. Dark humor is the thing for me.

LOL you know, i wouldn't be surprised if raman was doing a Ph.D on, as you put it, 'the finer aspects of being bored to death' =P by now he has probably compiled several batches of data on the subject-- ah, i feel like a lab rat XD
nikki begged me to come, and what do i get? i meet you guys for 5 freaking minutes, and sit in a freezing class completely sleep-deprived, and really, the only useful thing today was the 20 minutes i spent with mla clearing doubts after 12. and the 4 hours of sleep after that at my friend's place (im staying with her for now, because my brother's spending the weekend with his friend at hill ridge.) =P
LOL @ Lord and Lady Circumference XD
well, good luck for the tests!

haha
luckily he didn't come to teach us math today, or... you know. instead of brushing up our skills, having our questions answered, we would only end up amassing another ton of questions and be weighed down by the guilt that his "OH YOU'RE NOT STUDYING!!!!" speeches would have generated.

on a side note, there's a satirical news website called Faking News. it's hilarious. here's one of the fake news entries, for example: http://www.fakingnews.com/2010/02/parliament-adjourned-to-discuss-pregnancy-rumors-about-aishwarya-rai/

i checked it out-- HAHAHA omg i love it! LOL it totally reminds of me of eighth grade =P in an attempt to make us read newspapers, the school had this period every friday where each group would present the news of the week in class. we never prepared for it, so we would make our own news up =P like, once we wrote this enormous article about the improving condition of the elephant population of india. =P

XDD
we did something like that once, too. this dumbish kid in class had to read out the headlines in the assembly but he forgot to write them down, so my friend and i were helping him by making stuff up. unfortuately i don't remember any of it now, but we kind of (being the incredibly nice people that we were) made sure that the headlines stood out as ridiculous. unfortunately nobody suspected anything...

on a slightly unrelated note the same friend and i (being the literary prefects) were assigned with the task of going around the classes and announcing the topic for that week's debate competition. so as part of a social experiment, we decided to announce this topic -- "should contraceptives be used more widely among teenagers" -- which we made up, in our own class. and we did. everyone was laughing and the math teacher was all gaga. the best part was everyone actually thought it was a genuine topic. XD
later on the english teacher caught us. she had this grin on her face. "you guys have really ticked her off now. she thinks you're perverts. hahaha." so we made up 10 other topics and showed them to the math teacher and told her that these were in a CBSE book that the english teacher gave us. we went back and told the english teacher and she agreed to play along. it was cool..
those were the days. XDD

Lol... I did that often too-- help out someone who forgot they had to read the news that day, that is =P if I had read the paper in the morning, I'd just write out the real news with a bit of crap in between, but if I hadn't, I'd totally let my imagination get away. =P no one ever suspected a thing XD

Hahahahaha!!! I can't believe you actually did that =P your English teacher seems cool.

haha

yeah, she is cool. my friend and i were her favorite students. when we were talking about a teacher all three of us hated, she actually said "f``` her" -- twice; the second time when i deliberately said, "huh?" XD then she was like "you boys are not telling anyone i said this!" XDDD

XD LOL!!

I had a cool english teacher like that too =P and a similar math teacher.. he's probably been voted mr.cool every single teacher's day =P he knows every single thing that goes on on school, gossip and relaionships included, and ive totally seen him giving some love advice XDXD once in the physics lab (he taught math and physics)he said some thing on the lines of 'stop chasing her, she'll never even look at you-- have you looked at yourself in the mirror?' LOL
and he'd always subtly let us on about teachers' politics.

man, i really miss good teachers.
