I don’t know if it’s just I who am not as good at Circles as Benny expects me to be or if the questions really are so hard. I was trying to solve problems from the TMH book, and they were infuriatingly hard (or tedious, or elusively hard to understand), and headache-inducing – even harder than the ones in the Archive, in fact. I’ve always disliked coordinate geometry, because the problems are so tedious, and so hard to solve without scribbling rubbish that looks fine until you get to the bottom of the page, where you being to feel you went wrong somewhere. You end up not doing that problem at all, because you just don’t want to put yourself through the torture of doing that entire, big sum all over again from the start. And then there’s the matter of the mistakes the authors make. Circles is so annoyingly full of them. There was this matrix matching question that was ENTIERLY wrong. It went like this: They gave you an equation of a circle and four points in Column B. Column A had the equations of the common chords of the circle with respect to those points. But the problem was… NONE OF THE COMMON CHORDS MATCHED. You could tell just by looking at the equations: the y-coefficients were all negative, but the x- and y-coefficients in the equation of the circle were not, and three out of four points had positive x- and y-coordinates. SO HOW IN THE WORLD CAN YOU GET A NEGATIVE Y-COEFFICIENT IN S1???
When I get frustrated with math, I turn to physics. H. C. Verma’s cool. Yes, I’m beginning to think Jenny’s eulogies aren’t completely meaningless. Some of the questions are hard, but they’re not hard in the way coordinate geometry questions are. They’re challenging – they actually make you think. It’s not like you know the procedure right at the start, but are put off by the thought of how many tedious calculations you have to do before you get to the answer. Which is why physics, confusing though it may be sometimes, is the best of the three subjects.
Not that chemistry has been all that bad. In fact, this year, chemistry has actually been fun. I suppose that has something to do with the fact that Lenny’s a lot better as a teacher than Sukrit. I actually did all the assignments and CPPs of Nitrogen-Containing Compounds and Biomolecules – which is more than I would have done last year.
And as regards Jenny’s outrageous plan on how to study first year’s syllabus alongside second year’s… it’s hard, but I concede that Jenny has a point. I for one don’t want to take the AITS and end up wishing I’d studied first-year stuff. So I’ll start on the first-year thing tomorrow. Not today. It’s easy for Jenny to say, but I really can’t begin to NOT care about the PET scores and ranks that easily.

Circles is kind of maddening, I agree. You know those days when you just can't seem to solve anything correctly, whaatever subject you try? Today was one of those days. I couldn't get past the 8th problem on the math worksheet, and just like you, I turned to H C Verma and tried 5 freaking problems. I didn't get 3 of them -_-" I look at chemistry, and go.. screw it. Today was terribly unproductive.
Around 2 weeks ago I called up one of my friends from Faraday and we analyzed our sorry lives in terms of academics, and how completely demotivated we were in phase 4. Phanidhar's organic chem sucked-- we didn't remember a thing. So somehow a plan to redo organic chem turned into an 8 week revision plan for the first year stuff, ending on-- you guessed it -- september 30th XD so imagine my amusement when jenny walked in with his plan =P my plan is .. weekly, because I find it more flexible. So far I've finished Alkanes and I'm halfway through Straight Lines (I figured it would be useful since we're doing a lot of geometry right now).
Good luck with your revision. How is it going, btw?
