I swear, chemistry is going to KILL me this phase – worse than it did when we had ionic equilibrium or that useless, worthless qualitative analysis chapter. I naïvely thought Electrochemistry was going to be mildly interesting, going by its sophisticated name, but it turns out that I had vastly overestimated its appeal, and that there is nothing remotely scientific about it. It’s all a bunch of useless theories with millions of unnecessary concepts – all to support a subject that has only two practical applications: the electrolytic cell and the galvanic cell. I imagine I would have understood the chapter just as well, if we hadn’t been taught “electrode potential” or “standard electrode potential” or “standard reduction potential” or “standard oxidation potential” or “molar conductivity” or “equivalent conductivity” or “molar ionic conductivity” or “equilibrium constant of a galvanic cell” or any of the rest, in such unnecessary detail. The chapter spans about a hundred pages in my notebook, even though my handwriting is microscopic and I stuff two to three lines into every line. What do we have in the end? A chapter with some five formulas and around three extraordinarily easy concepts.
Did I hope to derive some form of relief from thermodynamics after that? I did. What I hadn’t realized was that the First Law of Thermodynamics itself, and practically every symbol used in the chapter, differed vastly from what I had learned in physics last year. I think chemists are a bitter, pretentious group of people who only came up with that ridiculous sign convention because they wanted to establish theirs as a superior science to physics. But why in the world did they have to use E as the symbol of internal energy instead of U? Another thing that really bugs me is that you can’t expect chemistry teachers to adhere to the rules of math or to be able to respond to any of your arguments, when you question the logical soundness of what they teach. Lenny, for instance, can’t defend what he writes on the board, even when he’s right. For instance, he integrated dPdV over a nonzero change in volume to zero, and justified it by saying dP and dV were both very small and therefore negligible constants. A girl rightly pointed out the “integration variable” couldn’t possibly be a constant, and that if it were, how did he integrate dV/V over the same change in volume to ln(V2/V1)? He lamely said, “You can’t expect a chemistry person to know more than this.” The answer was SO obvious. Only dP is a negligibly small constant, so that when you end up getting dP(V2-V1) after integrating, you can approximate it to zero. So the chemistry class is basically divided into three broad groups: the first, which thinks the teacher is wrong; the second, the teacher, who is actually right but can’t justify what he writes; the third, which can justify it.
Lenny’s a good teacher, but I’m sorry, I just can’t help being mean to him and the entire Chemistry Cult. WHY does there have to be a separate subtopic for each of the the four different kinds of isothermal and the four different kinds of adiabatic processes? The fact that Lenny tends to be incredibly longwinded (Seriously, couldn’t he have just written “Heat/enthalpy of a reaction” instead of “Heat of a reaction/enthalpy of a reaction”?) doesn’t help one bit. Thermochemistry is an incredibly stupid chapter. I don’t know if anyone noticed this, but the definition of enthalpy itself changed. I was hardly surprised when the barrage of unnecessary concepts started coming at me: heat of a reaction; standard heat of a reaction; heat of formation; standard heat of formation; heat of combustion; standard heat of combustion. Am I seriously expected to study this garbage?

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY. These days me and Steffie have been randomly taking turns to pay attention to chem, while she plays with a Rubik's cube/ her phone or I play on my iPod/ stare into space thinking of including nasty plot turns in that political AU fanfic I want to write next year. XD I mean, all I have to do is turn to the board once in a while and copy the crap strewn over it mindlessly.
Today's class was sooooo boring. I really expected Thermochemistry to be better than Thermodynamics (what the heck is with their sign convention anyways???) but he kept going on and on about so many kinds of 'heat of ____'.. Unfortunately it was my turn to pay attention today XD Chemistry has really been a pain since chemical equilibrium... And when are we going to finish the syllabus??
Ah, at least you can afford to that. But really, there is no point in listening to what he says, because you won't understand it anyway. Isn't chemistry just beautiful?
We are never going to finish the syllabus. Sukrit said somethihng about organic chemistry last year that I think applies to chemistry in general: "You will never finish chemistry; chemistry will finish you."
Ah, there was a chem extra class today. Steffie called me at 7:45 in the morning and told me it was at 8; so I just got up, picked her up and ran . The SMS they sent out to us late in the night specified no timing, and on calling fiitjee we received the wrong information (surprise, surprise), so all in all we ended up arriving two hours early for the class- it was at 10.
...After that-- well, since we had no mode of transport to go back home (I had somehow forced my dad to drop us) we walked to the British Library to find it closed, and then walked to McDonalds at Prasads XDXD We arrived before opening time, so when we finally had some breakfast there and took an auto back to school with ice cream cones in our hands, we burst out laughing, 'coz this has to be the most outrageous thing we've ever done =P
Anyways, the class was boring. Same old stuff, and he started on some numericals which involve simple addition. We have an extra class from 8 on Sunday as well. *Yawn*
LOL That has to be the most accurate description of Chemistry ever! Epic. XD
Okay, this is really starting to annoy me... No descriptions are needed.
I have sagaciously inferred that I will have missed 2 chemistry classes by the time I return. Is Lenny showing what they call "his true colors"????
So are you taking the PET tomorrow?
Also, University of Illinois's decision is supposed to come in today, a few hours later. It has a 65% acceptance rate, so I wouldn't be too worried about being admitted, but still. You can't be too sure when it comes to American universities. They're as subjective as they come.
Lenny is a pink flamingo.
=P
No, I didn't take the PET. I choose to stay as home, dress up like an Eskimo (damn, it's really cold!) and snuggle up with SHM. -_-
So any news?
Pink... it figures. I don't want to bring this up now, but did you know that the color pink is often used to symbolize homosexuality? XD
But that would too obscene an interpretation of "pink flamingo".
Funnily, I can actually imagine him as a flamingo. That funny face, that piercing gaze... XDD
Yeah, there's news.
University of Illinois deferred my application... I can't believe it. I almost feel like cursing. XS
They will inform me of their decision on February 18.
XSSSS
My point exactly. I can even imagine him standing on one leg with the other one bent XD
LOL Pink? I should really ask Nikki to come look at this =P
Ugh, that sucks. How absolutely infuriating!
So the chem extra class kind of became 4 periods of a normal working day-- there were other sections who had school as well-- we had double chem and double math. We did a bit of ellipse in math, you know those sums that go 'find the .. directrixlatusrectumsemimajoraxisandalltheotherthingsyoucanthinkofnow!' which was really boring, and Chemistry.. must I say anything?
We have math extra class tomorrow at 1:30. A normal class on ellipse, 'coz apparently Benny will be on leave from the 25th, and she wants to finish everything by then.
So I heard. Hey, then tomorrow I would probably need to borrow your chemistry notebook and have it photocopied after 12.50. Knowing Lenny, (the equivalent of) a triple class with him would have yielded at least a hundred pages' worth of notes, which would be impossible for any sane, self-respecting, and non-chemically inclined person to copy.
Is there anything else I should be prepared for before I show up at FIITJEE? (It kind of feels like throwing yourself before a wall and having a dozen communist soldiers gun you down simultaneously.)
I would gladly give you my notebook if it weren't for the fact that it is horribly illegible, incomplete, and a disaster. You forget that I haven't been paying attention XD You would better off with someone else's notes... But you know, there isn't much to copy. Just really simple sums, and oh, I forgot-- we started V A today. We wrote 4 pages if super concise notes.
Aw... XS
This might sound a little stupid, but... What's in V A? If I remember correctly, it's Nitrogen???
