MIT etc.

MIT did not accept me in the end, and what do you know? I’m okay with that. It was fun being on the wait list for a short while, and it was thrilling to know that I was being considered for admission. As someone told me, getting to the wait list is an achievement in itself. And UIUC might just be the better option for me at this stage. MIT can wait until I’m done with my undergraduate studies. MIT’s mail was not terse like Stanford’s, Berkeley’s, Cornell’s, and Princeton’s were, for which MIT certainly gets a point – or maybe two. I was prepared for this from the start, so it didn’t affect me much. Besides, like I said earlier, it was fun being on the wait list. UIUC is an amazing school (at least for CS), and I look forward to going there. We’ll be visiting Chicago sometime in June to check out the campus. I’ll be going again in August for the orientation program.

Now that I’m freer than I ever remember being at any point in my long, arduous life, I’ve discovered that I actually enjoy watching cricket – something I would never have accused myself of doing just a few months ago. The World Cup was fun to watch, and the IPL is addicting. Bangalore plays Rajasthan today, and that will be a very interesting game. I support Bangalore (since some of my favorite players are there), and Kolkata. I gave up on Deccan, once it became apparent that they weren’t going to win another game in seven hundred and fifty-nine years.

If you scroll down to the entry of April 11, you will notice that I put up a few pictures of my study desk that I took before and after the IITJEE. I will mention here that that the “before” pictures reflect only a small, insignificant portion of the FIITJEE torture, which I wrote about in the entry of May 3. And apparently the wine bottle I mentioned in my last entry was a beer bottle, as Nanochip told me when I described the bottle to him. That changes things a bit. Still, it was a beer bottle, and beer bottles are strictly not allowed at FIITJEE, courtesy of teetotaler and champion disciplinarian Vijay Waghray (who makes a cameo as Vajay Wiggeray in my story How GK Came to Own a Degree). Since I’m not a FIITJEE student anymore (having been given my transfer certificate and certificate of conduct along with the marks memo), I could have reported BS to the authorities. An institution that so pompously proclaims that watching TV and checking your email are distractions, and that students should cut off all connections with the outside world in order to ensure efficiency, cannot indulge alcoholics in this way and claim to be consistent at the same time. I actually wanted to walk up to BS and say, “You know, I could report you for that.” I had the opportunity, but I let it go.

My cousin and his wife are visiting us on the 13th, which just so happens to be a Friday this month. They got married on the 5th – technically (and legally), the 1st. We were in Calcutta for the Hindu ceremony thing (which was on the 5th). We stayed there from the 4th to the 8th. I don’t feel like writing about that trip here – there were too many events, and too many people to introduce. So I’ll end this entry here.

Well, then, see you at MIT for the postgraduate bit XD I know that sounds presumptuous, but I'm currently working on my parents to make sure it's a foregone conclusion that I'll be doing my MS in America. My mom's already with me. And I keep dropping hints about it, which kind of irks my dad, because he thinks I'll stay in America even after I get my degree. But, you know what? I'm finished moping about not having persuaded them about this earlier. It's time to be rebellious and selfish, yay. I promptly expressed this by picking the top college instead of the nearest one (to Hyderabad) when I was making my preference list in an application form. Screw Hyderabad. I'm not compromising anymore. If I can get into a better college than the ones here, I'm sure as heck going there. =] Yay me! XD

Who are your favorite players in Bangalore? All I watch on TV anymore is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and not even because I like it. It comes on at the time I eat lunch. As a result, I've finished the series. I wrote a long rambling analysis of the series to Steffie after that. I'll send it to you sometime. =P

Ah, weddings are rather annoying to write about, aren't they? Too many people and too many events. How did your cousin's visit go?

Ha ha... Yeah, see you at MIT. :D
Really, that would be awesome.
So which is your first choice of college right now?

I support Bangalore mainly for AB de Villiers. He's awesome. Which is probably why I supported South Africa during the World Cup until they lost against New Zealand. Chris Gayle has been amazing lately.

Sure, send it over. :)

They're here. We visited Golconda Fort the day before yesterday, and for the first time sat through the Light and Sound Show. Then we went to the Salar Jung Museum, and for some weird reason, Charminar yesterday. That's about it. They're leaving tomorrow or on the 18th.
