a leaf out of my diary

Six weeks up, six more to go. Of work, that is. Then a not entirely uneventful summer will come to an end. I’ve finished Hollywood by Gore Vidal, and am reading Wodehouse’s Psmith Journalist. That shouldn’t take me too long to finish, unless I get distracted by Slam Dunk in the middle, and end up watching dozens of episodes on end, as is my wont.  You can tell, I suppose, from the desultory nature of this entry, that this is just another one of those glorified diary entries that I write in the interest of recording events in their unadulterated form for future reference. If posterity won’t be interested, I can still refresh my memory with them when I am old and broken. Just the other day, for instance, when I was struggling to remember when it was that we had had nearly seventy-two straight hours of rain, this entry from 2008 came to my rescue, proving conclusively that it was 2008 when this happened, and not 2007 or 2006. I have no doubt that this blog will prove sometime in the future the historian’s Garden of Eden.

Something even more journalistic than that now. I pulled a muscle in my back (I think) last Sunday when I ran in this hilly region after not having run in several days. I spent this last week convalescing from that, though I did not take the opportunity to feign something worse and skip work. Those icy heat medicated patches (5% menthol!) work pretty well as a topical analgesic. I spent most of today playing Cinderella. By that I mean I did a lot of housekeeping today, and my back did not bother me too much. Shall I run tomorrow? Shall I dare to run through the front door into the great outdoors, screaming and laughing? Perhaps not for another day or two. In the meantime, Shohoku lost to Kainan, as I told Nikki earlier, who seemed to take a healthy interest in the subject. I even implored Nikki to start watching Slam Dunk so that someone would be able to understand all the random outbursts of affection for SD I’ve been having lately. Perhaps she won’t. The anime pill is a very addictive one. Once taken, you will find that it’s impossible to wean yourself off it. Whether to take it is a life-altering question that everyone must perforce consider at some point; and those who are brave and adventurous enough to say Yes find their lives so much the better.
