Modern Art

This is a poem.
It does not rhyme;
But then,
Do poems have to rhyme?

Modern art is amazing.
No one
Comprehends it,
No one
Knows what it means.
Which is why it's amazing.
Because
If you don't understand something
It must be profound.

Or bad,
But if something is bad,
And you call it bad,
They say you don't understand it.
Then you think,
Oh, it must be profound.

So the art is profound,
But you don't understand it.
But the art is profound
Because you don't understand it.
Music is meaningless
Unless infused with profound stuff -
Profound stuff
That you won't understand.

(That's what makes it profound,
Stupid.)

They say,
"Oh, this music makes you think!"
"These paintings make you think!"
And you get the impression
That they understand the
Profound secrets
Of those profound works of art.

But you would be wrong,
For they, like you,
Are trying to divine this
Profound stuff -

Stuff that confounds
Lesser folk,
And is avoided by
Those unthinking apostles of vulgar taste
Who like art for its own sake.
