Vacating my last apartment has proven quite a bit more irritating than I would have hoped. Mostly because the property manager has been quite uncooperative. He told me recently that I could disconnect the water and power supplies whenever I wanted, because they would automatically be transferred to the landlord's office, and so I did that once my roommate and I had both vacated that little hole in the wall. Not a day later I got an email from this knuckle dragger threatening to disconnect the air-conditioning and water heater if a turn-on order for electricity was not issued by the next day. This is because the landlord's office would not pay for air-conditioning and water heating in an apartment that was still occupied. I, of course, don't care what they do, now that I have vacated the apartment, but it was not a little irritating to be spoken to as if I had done something unprecedented or borderline illegal - especially by someone so inconsequential pretending to positions of authority so far beyond him. If that fat man was so shocked that I disconnected power and water for the last three months on my lease during which the apartment would remain unoccupied, then he should have expressed his displeasure clearly over the phone when I first asked him about it, instead of giving me monosyllabic answers tinged with the kind of irritation you feel when someone is asking dumb questions. But I wouldn't expect couth behavior from someone as uncouth as Mr. Property Manager, whose paunch is so vast that you could lay dinner for a family of four on it, with room for dessert. And I'm sure he doesn't need airbags in his car, either. I suppose the fault is mine for expecting rational behavior from a man whose parting words at our first meeting two years ago were, "My wife's making ribs tonight!" His drool on that occasion may well have been his brain fluids leaking out of his skull, where no brain has resided since the early 90s.
