slam dunk days

Watching Slam Dunk again, of course. It seems to be a theme with me each summer. Edited the Wiki (which I founded) a little this past week. And it just occurred to me that Ryonan is like a well-oiled machine in the Kanagawa Tournament - right up until their unfortunate loss to Shohoku. They are like a new technology that astounds and instills fear into the heart of everyone watching. The ultimate creation of scientists. One is reminded of the Indominus rex in Jurassic World. Everything is perfect. Shohoku represents the triumph of traditional human qualities over perfection, and Kainan is raw experience and talent. Sadness.

Also Kainan is prevented from being perfect by the presence of Kiyota. E.g. when the Ryonan and Kainan teams are practicing before their game, Kiyota makes a fool of himself by attempting an alley-oop all by himself, and failing. He is the humanizing element in the Kainan team. Without him, Kainan might be a well-oiled machine, too, notwithstanding Coach Takato's insistence that Kainan has no aces or whatever. We know that's not true. Maki is literally superman. Their drive and determination are second to none.

It must be said, however, that Maki still seems more human than Sendoh and Rukawa, who seem to derive their abilities from an entirely superlunary source. It's amazing how Sendoh and Rukawa are so similar in their playing styles (the offensive aspects, at least), yet so different. Takehiko Inoue certainly is a genius.
