I must say, Mayuri is steadily becoming my favorite character in Bleach, ever since Byakuya’s demise in spirit, if not in body. Mayuri never gets stale. There are always surprises with him. He’s been responsible for some of the funniest moments in Bleach in a long time. But I fear that his end is near. He’s been having too many flashbacks, and things are being revealed about Nemu at such a rate that the only conclusion you can draw is that Kubo’s trying to turn Mayuri into a deep character, with his own personal trials and sorrows, preparatory to killing him off. Mayuri will be remembered as a unique and fascinating character.
On the point of death, I must say, why the FUCK didn’t Kubo let Byakuya die a dignified death when he had the chance? That scene where Äs Nödt floats in the air, placid and godlike, and with his head tilted ever so slightly to a side, as if kicking off the Day of Judgement, and Byakuya stands below him, covered in blood, utterly defeated, is just so tragic. It was the perfect death for the noblest character of them all. Yet suddenly Kubo seemed to decide that he didn’t want Byakuya to die after all, and reduced him to an effete has-been whose new outfit was topped off by a FEZ of all things. His power-up was overshadowed by the fact that Rukia got her Bankai, so basically he’s not needed anymore. Just fucking LET HIM DIE already, before he has to suffer the indignity of seeing Renji surpass him, which he seems well on the path to doing.
And what about Grimmjow and Aizen? You’d think after those two jewels of Hueco Mundo made their dramatic return to the scene, we’d get to see more of them in action. That isn’t, however, the case. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kubo had to consult Bleach fan art just to remember what they looked like.
