Yesterday I was stuck at the grocery store with a bunch of amateurs. The guy, Scott, ringing me up couldn't scan a party bag I was buying for shit. (This was after he'd asked me if I wanted to bag stuff in it... I didn't take any chances with sarcasm.) He couldn't understand the veteran Russian lady when she tried telling him the code and in the end gave it to me for free. It was a $6 bag. As if that weren't enough, the guy bagging my stuff looked like he was playing Tetris with my groceries - and failing. He unbagged and rebagged everything several times before he ended up putting the bread in in such a way that it was impossible to hold the handles of the bag together. So he offered to carry it out to my car. In the process I misdirected him by walking toward a shoddy old station wagon, which I then passed, and my own car - let's just say it's not a shoddy old station wagon - came into view. I was more amused than annoyed. Scott and Baguette (I didn't get his name) were probably high school students working at the grocery store over the summer. (Though they both looked a fair bit older. Probably not high school students, then.) It would be unfortunate if either of them lost their job over this, though the store in question is no Walmart, so I would think they would be far more forbearing of the mistakes of novices. I went back to the grocery store today and found that Scott had been consigned to bagging items for the Russian lady. (No sign of Baguette.) He very nicely asked an ancient Asian lady whose considerable purchases he had just bagged whether he could take her stuff to her car. He must have asked more than once, because the next thing I heard was the lady yelling "No!" and snatching her cart away from Scott. I have never been in a situation in which the interjection "Great Scott!" was more appropriate.
