As of last week, Major League Cricket is a thing in America. I became aware of it and the fact that Seattle had our very own team, the Seattle Orcas, with a more than halfway-decent name and colors, through social media, a medium I have tried unsuccessfully to swear off of, the day of its inaugural game. I personally know more than one co-owner of the Seattle team, and it was no surprise to me that this attempt to introduce the American people to a new sport is being funded largely or entirely by the Indian American community. Even if America as a whole never grows to love cricket, there are probably enough Indian Americans around to keep this thing going for a long time to come. Watching some of these matches I was reminded of my brief infatuation with cricket in the terminal months of high school, just before I went off to college and had no cause to keep up with cricket news whatever. I was watching every World Cup game and every IPL game after the World Cup ended. I was a particular fan of South Africa, possibly because I fancied some of their players. It's a bit of a shock seeing them again in the MLC at the tail-end of their careers. The sort of time skip that life rarely prepares you for. A brief flicker of recognition, and then you remember who So-and-so was and marvel at your younger self.
