What is my assessment of Lubomyr Melnyk? His music is pleasant enough to listen to. Very atmospheric. I can imagine a playlist of his works on Spotify might have a title like "Soothing Piano Music". But to call him a prophet of the piano, inventor of a groundbreaking technique of piano playing called "continuous music", as if no one before him had ever thought to play arpeggios rapidly, is ludicrous. It's the kind of hyperbole that a novice to the piano might be given to who thinks a glissando is the height of virtuosity or that Yiruma's "River Flows in You" belongs up there with the Moonlight Sonata in the constellation of great works of music. There is no interview of Lubomyr Melnyk that doesn't hail him as "possibly the fastest piano player in the world" or fails to mention his record-breaking speed of playing "nineteen notes per second", whatever that means, while he runs his hands up and down the keyboard like every eight-year-old piano student who pretends to be Franz Liszt before an imaginary audience is wont to do, as if the rapidity with which one hits notes defines music. Any serious aficionado of classical or jazz piano can't but scratch their head in bemusement, as I did, when these childish exercises are put forward as prodigious feats of pianism, because actual pianists can play Lubomyr Melnyk under the table before breakfast any day of the week. If people are so impressed by these silly arpeggios, I should hate for them to stumble upon a energetic performance of the third movement of the Moonlight Sonata by a talented twelve-year-old without a doctor being close at hand. I could believe that Lubomyr Melnyk is someone who found a piano in a junkyard and taught himself how to play it without any formal training or exposure, and that alone would be worthy of every commendation, if he weren't peddling these ridiculous claims about being a prophet of the piano, the first to create something new for the instrument in 400 years. For having made those claims, Lubomyr Melnyk is but a fraud.
