Soccer-themed sports anime I decided to give a watch yesterday. It breaks
from the usual formula of sports anime by shunning the whole National Inter
Highs journey and going full Squid Game. It strains credulity more than a
normal sports anime, though for that reason it’s amusing and kind of engaging.
If you thought the stakes in Slam Dunk were high, wait till you see what
they’re putting on the line here. They introduce this really talented player
at the start and tee him up to be a sort of rival/friend of the protagonist,
and then he’s just gone at the end of the first episode, never to appear
again. The writers must love subverting tropes.
