My latest anime drug. It's so good. I think I watched the first episode several years ago but for some reason didn't get into it. I'm glad I gave it another shot. I'll be honest, my impetus was some very tasteful phone wallpapers of some prominent Hashira. At a very high level I guess you could accuse the story of being formulaic, sharing the general arc of other anime like Bleach, Naruto, and let's be honest, any shonen series. I don't know why I fall for the same formula time and time again, but clearly I'm not alone. The protagonist Tanjiro (to me at least) is very likeable and inspiring. I don't know whether to call this a break from the shonen formula or an evolution of it, but more and more shonen protagonists are not boneheads who ride their unlimited stubbornness and/or determination to undeserved glory. Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia is another example of what I'd call the new shonen protagonist. Anyway, back to Tanjiro, he's not wicked smart like Izuku, but he's got the most heart of any character I've seen in fiction in a long time, and you really want to root for him. However, he's not my favorite character, because that spot is traditionally reserved for the one tsundere character in any show; in Demon Slayer, it's Giyu Tomioka, the water Hashira. Having finished the anime, which ends on a cliffhanger just before the final battle, I'm so dismayed that I have to wait for a movie trilogy, the first of which isn't slated to come out until later this year, to complete the story. It's only January 5, but I kinda already want this year to be over. There are a couple reasons why I think I'm okay with this: 1) one of my resolutions this year is to delay gratification; I'm going to have to wait many more months for my next hit; 2) movie-grade animation? Hell yeah.
