Superman (spoilers)

Watched Superman with the fam this evening to cap off my birthday. This was my first Superman movie in a while, and it hit me with all the childhood nostalgia appropriate when one turns the age I turned today. Superman was my favorite superhero when I was a kid, and the new guy, David Corenswet, played the part with humor, heart, and hotness. In fact the entire cast was stunning. Rachel Brosnahan played a confident, independent Lois Lane, completely unlike the damsel in distress superhero girlfriends tend to be reduced to in this kind of movie. Nicholas Hoult, whom I love, played Lex Luthor so well that I genuinely didn’t question the idea that he might actually be bald. The news media and geopolitical themes were a little simplistic, but the movie didn’t pretend it was going for verisimilitude. If recent events prove anything, it’s that bombshell news reports about public figures do little to sway popular support for them, let alone the kind of instantaneous and complete way in which the public turned against Superman when the second half of his birth parents’ recorded message was revealed. Mr. Terrific’s assertion that news agencies would not have released the recording if they hadn’t been absolutely certain of its authenticity didn’t ring very convincing either. As much as I hope we lived in that world, the fact is we don’t. Finally, after Lex Luthor’s nefarious schemes were brought to light by The Daily Planet, the news was received with remarkably little suspicion and opposition, totally unlike the mistrust of news reporting that is rampant today. A politician character shown in passing being interviewed on TV even managed to sneak in a feeble “if there’s one thing conservatives and liberals can agree on, it’s that Lex Luther sucks”, as if there were anything in the world conservatives and liberals could still agree on. I’m sure a lot of people will agree with me when I say the dog was the real star of the movie.
